Learning from the River - The Bad Deutsch-Altenburg Pilot Project

In February 2012, construction work began on the Bad Deutsch-Altenburg pilot project. The objective of the project was to test river engineering measures for the sustainable protection of the national park and inland navigation. In the project section, bank restoration, connection of tributaries, optimization of low-water regulation and granulometric bed improvement to stabilize the riverbed were implemented together for the first time. The integrative planning approach is used nationally and internationally as best practice for planning projects. The various interest groups were involved via an accompanying stakeholder forum. The entire construction period was accompanied by film. After about 2.5 years, the project was successfully completed in July 2014. The scientific monitoring of the implemented measures will be continued in the coming years.
